Multipath streaming in best-effort networks

چکیده
Multipath streaming is used by resource intensive applications to stream their data over multiple, disjoint paths, thereby cumulating the resources of the different subpaths. The trend towards application-layer implementations of communication protocols allows the deployment of a multipath streaming protocol in the current Internet. However, because resource availability fluctuates in the Internet, a multipath streaming protocol must be combined with other mechanisms, e.g., adaptation, to address these fluctuations. This paper describes two approaches to combine adaptation and multipath streaming. The first approach separates the two mechanisms and thereby allows multipath streaming to be transparent to the application, whereas the other approach combines the two mechanisms in the application context. This paper compares the two approaches along various parameters. It shows that the first approach is easier to deploy from an engineering point of view, but the separation of multipath streaming and adaptation yields significant drawbacks. Especially, synchronization problems due to different latencies along the paths that form the multipath setup may lead to a significant drop in the quality of the data.

The Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks
Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...
متن کاملAbout Multiple Paths Video-streaming: State of the Art
With the best effort service presented by today’s Internet network, video streaming applications face an important challenge, especially with the aim to keep the quality perceived by the end user high enough. Several approaches had been explored in order to cope with this aspect. These approaches still suffer from many problems like scalability, complexity, and deployment. Recently, many resear...
متن کاملQoE Enhancement of Audio-Video IP Transmission in Cross-Layer Designed Ad Hoc Networks
The QoE (Quality of Experience), which is perceptual quality for the users, is the most important QoS (Quality of Service) among those at all levels since the users are the ultimate recipients of the services. Even in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), provision of high QoE is one of the most important issues. Some applications of ad hoc networks require the ability to support real-time multimedia...
متن کاملOn the efficacy of quality, frame rate, and buffer management for video streaming across best-effort networks
In this paper, we propose a mechanism that supports the high quality streaming and adaptation of stored, constant-quality video across best-effort networks. The difficulty in the delivery of such traffic over best-effort networks is the fact that both the bandwidth required from the stream and the bandwidth available across the network vary considerably over time. Our proposed approach has a nu...
متن کاملAn Audio-Video Multipath Streaming Scheme for Ad Hoc Networks: The Effect of Node Mobility
This letter studies the effect of node mobility on application-level QoS of audio-video multipath streams in wireless ad hoc networks. The audio-video streams are transmitted with the MultiPath streaming scheme with Media Synchronization control (MPMS), which was previously proposed by the authors. We perform computer simulation with a grid topology network of IEEE 802.11b including two mobile ...
